See Denver’s Library Branches in a Whole New Mid-Century Modern Light!

Take a step back and appreciate a few of these mid-century modern branch libraries in neighborhoods around the city, with our virtual and self-guided tour during Denver Modernism Week.

The Denver Public Library system has more than just a huge collection of books, media, and other resources . . . it also has an impressive collection of unique works of architecture, including several one-of-kind modernist buildings by some of Denver’s most influential architects.

Free Virtual Tour:

Take a 360° virtual tour on your computer, phone, or tablet, with historical highlights and useful information inside each tour. In this 360° virtual tour, discover architectural features and historical interpretations of these fine buildings that are central to our neighborhoods and communities. With content produced while libraries were just opening after being closed for months during the COVID-19 pandemic, make note of how libraries looked during our own unusual moment in history.

By looking past the books and computers, you’ll see these library branches differently, appreciate interesting features and design elements that will come into full focus after learning about them. Plus, you will be introduced to important modernist architects who have shaped Denver, including Victor Hornbein, William Muchow, Chuck Sink, Alfred Watts Grant, and Paul Reddy.

Visit the Libraries in Person:

There’s nothing like experiencing a building in-person! Now that you know a little bit about their history, design, and architects from the virtual tour, why not pay each branch a visit in-person to see and experience their scale, detailing, light quality, and more.

See the unique neighborhoods they serve, and enjoy new places you may not have visited before! Plus, get a sticker from each of the branches you visit during the week – collect all 5!

Enhance your experience!

Visit all five libraries and bring your completed collection of tour stickers to Red Delicious Press (located in the beautiful former Martin Luther King Jr. Library, designed by Victor Hornbein in Aurora) and the first 15 who visit will receive: A special view into an adaptively reused mid-mod library space, designed by Victor Hornbein and a numbered, original print from resident artist, Michael J. Keyes.
