There are not one, but two nationally significant restoration projects underway at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The first: the repair and restoration of the beloved and famed Cadet Chapel, designed by Walter Netsch. The other: Dan Kiley’s four-acre Air Garden, a formal garden containing a 700-foot-long gridded series of grass panels, reflecting pools, bridges, and fountains.
In this virtual talk and tour, USAFA Campus Architect Duane Boyle will guide attendees through the storied background of these incredible pieces of Modernist history with a visit to the site as it stands today and will shed light on the progress and process of the restoration for which the Cadet Chapel still has four years to go. Attendees will enjoy an interactive Q&A with Boyle following the presentation.
Net proceeds from all Denver Modernism Week 2020 presentations will benefit the newly formed Colorado chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects, NOMA 5280.
This is a guided VIRTUAL talk & tour, which will be held on a webinar platform over the internet, in order to encourage social distancing. This virtual platform offers an opportunity to bring this talk to modernism fans across the country, and allows us to look outside of Denver at a great example of historic preservation and restoration of modern architecture elsewhere in Colorado. There will be an opportunity to ask questions in a Q&A session after the talk is complete.
You will receive an email with a link for joining the talk 24-36 hours before it is scheduled to begin. We encourage you to come online for the talk 10-15 minutes in advance of the scheduled start time to ensure that your device and internet connection are working properly, and so that we can verify your ticket before joining the tour & talk.
